Brewers End West


Our page is about shops and shopkeepers in Brewers End (west) between 1808 and 1910.

We have found out about some of the shopkeepers names and how the shops have changed.
We found most of our information in the National Census and Kelly's Directory.

The Village Pump

 
In 1886 there were at least 6 pumps in Takeley. The villagers had to pay for the clean water. The pumps were made by George Ingold of Bishops Stortford. They were cast by W. Hughes, and F. Watson designed them. 5 Shareholders had a share of the money coming in. Elizabeth Piper was the main shareholder.    

Lambert's

 

The Lamberts

The directories tell us that in 1898 the post master was W. Lambert who was also a Draper and a Grocer. In 1908 William Lambert was still postmaster.

In the 1841 census we couldn't find any Lamberts.
In the 1861 census we found Elizabeth Lambert (14), a house maid to the vicar of Takeley. We also found Robert Lambert(41) a tailor and his wife was T. Lambert(49).

Their son was William Lambert(15) and two daughters Louise Lambert (12) and Elizabeth(12).

Also living nearby with their daughter was Thomas and Mary Lambert with their daughter Edith Jane.
In the 1891 census William Lambert was 43 years old and lived with his wife ,Sarah aged 43.
Their daughter Edith was post office clark at the age of 19 years. The son, Harry was a grocers assistant.

The grave stones in the chapel show that Sarah died age 66 years in 1911 and William Lambert died age 71years in 1916.

The Pipers
The directory tells us that in 1908 A.C. Piper was a cycle dealer and Mrs Elizabeth Piper a builder and undertaker.
In the census of 1891 Henry John Piper was living with his wife Lydia. He was 31 and she was 32. He was a carpenter and she was a dressmaker.
In the 1891 census, George Piper, aged 55, was a carpenter and shop keeper. Elizebeth was his wife. Emily, their daughter aged 25, was a dressmaker. Ester, Emily's sister was a schoolmistress and aged 22. Alfred was 11 and still at school soon to be the cycle dealer.

Grandaughter Ethel Perry was also living with them aged 4.
